Medyka, Poland, A Buzzing Point of Transition and Hope

It’s estimated that well over 2 million Ukrainian refugees have passed through Poland’s 8 border crossings escaping Russia’s siege on their homeland

Medyka, a busy crossing point between Poland and Ukraine, has seen a significant change since the war started. During that time, 1,500 Ukrainians per hour came to Poland seeking safety from the conflict. Aid organizations quickly set up tents to provide food, medical help, SIM cards, and other necessities for those in need. At Medyka, tents and stalls have become a beacon of hope for tired travelers. These temporary shelters provide not only physical aid but also some comfort in the chaotic situation. Every day, refugees nervously approach the border not knowing what will happen next. Once they pass through Medyka, they are at the mercy of the Polish government. Many hope to reunite with family already in Poland for a sense of belonging and familiarity. Others have specific destinations in mind where they believe they can start over. And some are grieving the loss of loved ones killed in the conflict they left behind.

In the face of tough times, they show remarkable strength and determination. They tell stories of surviving and staying hopeful, believing that they will eventually find safety and a better future. Knowing the difficulties they will face, they rely on each other for support, creating close-knit communities in the tents along the border. As days turn into weeks and weeks into months, these refugees keep going, fueled by the hope of a brighter tomorrow. Their desire for stability is a powerful reminder of the difficult times they left behind.

In the midst of the chaos, dedicated volunteers and aid workers tirelessly help those who have been forced from their homes and must now find a new path. Medyka, once just a border crossing, is now a symbol of strength and compassion. It shows that even in the darkest times, people can find courage. As the world watches, it is our shared responsibility to support these brave individuals as they face the challenges ahead, hoping that one day they will find peace and stability in a world without conflict.

While exact figures are unknown, It’s estimated that around 1.8 million Ukrainian refugees are staying in Poland, while many thousands have started their new lives all over Europe

In Przemyśl, there is a safe haven where refugees can rest and receive help before continuing their journey. They stay for a few days, get their documents from the government offices in Warsaw, and then move on to their final destination. Despite the temporary nature of their stay, this place provides them with much-needed comfort, safety, and cleanliness. It allows them to bring their families and find a sense of belonging and security.

The hub is a gateway for many individuals seeking safety and a fresh start. Although their time here is short, it has a profound impact on their lives. Families carry their belongings and experiences, finding solace not only in the physical safety but also in the support of fellow refugees and aid workers.

This safe haven becomes a symbol of hope, embodying courage and resilience. In Przemyśl, refugees find a sense of belonging and create unity within their transient existence. The walls may be temporary, but the emotional impact is long-lasting.

“I have to do whatever I can to forget that it has happened. Because from the beginning no one was thinking that it could be possible for the war to start. When the fighting started I was going to my work and my other son was trying to find someplace to escape and Kiel was running in the streets trying to find someplace to hide underground. We are trying to do everything to forget about it “ - Olga and her son Kiel from Kharkiv
